Former Meyer Park Alumni Stuart Holden makes USA National Team and Plays at World Cup South Africa!
One of our Meyer Park alumni, Stuart Holden, represented the USA at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. After playing for the Texans at Meyer Park, Stuart went on to play for the Houston Dynamos and now plays for the Bolton Wanderers in England. He joined the USA National Team in 2008. The Texans Soccer Club is affiliated with Klein and their select players practice and train at Meyer Park. We are extremely proud to have a player reach the highest level of play and have the opportunity to represent the USA. Earlier this year, Holden appeared on Good Morning America to talk about the World Cup and the opportunity to play in South Africa (You can view the interview here). On June 12th, Stuart substituted for Jozy Altidore in the game against England and played in front of a worldwide television audience stretching into the hundreds of millions. The game ended in a 1-1 tie. Team USA moved on and defeated Algeria with a stunning goal from Landon Donovan. This placed them 1st above England in group play, and advanced them to the next round of play. USA was then defeated by Ghana, but showed that they are a quality team that can compete.
Stuart moved to America from Scotland at the age of 10 and his parents drove him more than an hour each way to practice and play at Meyer Park with the Texans. Over the years, he grew and developed as a player. After developing his soccer skills with the Texans, he went on to college and played for Clemson University. At the age of 20, Holden went professional and began his career with the Houston Dynamo. In July 2008, he was named to the USA National Team to compete in the Beijing Olympics. Early this year, Holden again advanced his career and accepted an offer to play with the Bolton Wanderers in the English Premier League.
We are very proud of him, and he serves as an inspiration to all of the soccer community in Houston. In an interview speaking with younger players, Stuart emphasized that his persistence and refusal to never give up is what helped him. A strong work ethic and a love for the game helped propel Stuart to the highest level of play in the world.
